The real problem wasn’t technical
A farm in a valley about an hour and a half south-east of Melbourne, with no mobile reception at all — every call has to go over the internet — and a fixed-wireless connection that dropped out constantly. The deeper problem was imaginative: the owner had no mental model for what reliable, well-designed technology felt like. His systems were so poor and so expensive that he assumed every system carried the same weaknesses. He was openly sceptical he’d even use a better setup.
Sell the proof, not the concept
Rather than sell him a system, we suggested he simply buy a single Starlink dish on sale, drop it on the ground, run the modem inside, and see the result for himself. The moment it was running he was blown away — by the speed, and just as much by the fact that it didn’t drop out. On the spot he booked the roof mount and started asking how to get Wi-Fi through the whole house, then out to the workshop, the garages and the dam.
The design: Starlink for the backhaul, a UniFi gateway with dual access points through the long house for even coverage, an outdoor access point in directional mode beaming toward the garages and workshop, and a mesh unit bridging back and rebroadcasting toward the dam. All up, it blankets roughly 10,000–15,000 m² of the property.
From sceptic to advocate
A year later he asked us to look at his security. He had an ageing camera system where every power outage — frequent, out there — took the recording system down and cost him a call-out fee each time just to get it running again. We built a hardened, power-outage-proof backbone with battery backup and a live view on the TV. When he saw the difference — the smart detections, the resolution, the night vision — he chose to replace every camera, giving effectively whole-property 2K coverage.
He went from sceptic to advocate: he invited us to explain the system to a room of his friends, which turned into more work, and he now wants the same overhaul on a second property.
The method
Educate, prove the concept cheaply, and let the client discover the value themselves. Every expansion — the roof mount, the house Wi-Fi, the dam coverage, the full camera replacement — was him asking for more, not us pushing. Because he understands and uses the system, the investment is real to him. That’s exactly why he became a referral source.
